I started messing around with dynamic web apps and databases in 1994, at age 14. During high school I started a website, FreeVote.com, which let users create their own "voting booths" and visitors to booths could add items and/or vote on existing items. With FreeVote, I developed the web templating system I continue to use to this day, BML. I learned a lot about database design from FreeVote.com and turned it into a company, staffed by friends and volunteers. I later went on to make the now-insanely-popular LiveJournal.com, a community system and blogging platform. LiveJournal has taught me tons about large-scale systems architecture, and I continue to learn to this day. LiveJournal.com started as a hobby project, then turned into an open source project, and later a community-run website. Today there are over 1.7 million accounts, a million of which are active. We have two dozen MySQL databases and lots of open source code to make using MySQL in crazy, fun ways easy. I wrote an object-oriented templating language with syntax similar to Perl and Java with support for internationalization, reflection for HTML configuration wizards. That's in use by both LiveJournal.com and our photo hosting platform, PicPix.com. I'm one of the main creators of "memcached", a high-speed distributed memory object caching system. There are now five language bindings for it, and it's in use by many popular sites including Slashdot and Wikipedia. Memcached and MySQL complement each other nicely, especially when the application author knows more about the cache validity constraints than MySQL's query cache could possibly know, which must constantly empty its cache on table updates. In addition to memcached, I've developed different load balancing systems and others tools for dealing with tons of servers in highly dynamic environment (pretty much no static files... mod_perl and MySQL/memcached for everything). I'm interested in compilers, databases, operating system internals, and large-scale high-availabilty system design.
